Amaranth to Zai Holes: Ideas for growing food under difficult conditions by Laura Meitzner and Dr. Martin Price, is one of the best technical papers on appropriate technology for tropical and sub-tropical areas. This paper contains designs and setup for everything from bags to tires to wading pools used for growing food. Although originally published for ECHO (Educational Concerns for Hunger Organization) in 1996, most of the gardening information is just as relevant, if not moreso, today. And the world must agree: the site averages over 70,000 hits a month.

The Global Oneness Project is a web-based video initiative exploring how the simple notion of oneness can be lived in our increasingly complex world.

Hunger Grow Away is an organization that uses 100% of all contributions for the sole purpose of providing a unique gardening system – “Abundant Harvest Gardens“- to communities and individual families to “Help End Hunger One Family At A Time” throughout the United States and the rest of the world.

ORDER THE BOOK! Hank Bruce and Tomi Folk are the driving force behind Hunger Grow Away. They also wrote the “bible” on indigenous foods and global food options in gardening. If you want to really understand food security, if you want a reference for lesser known but more nutritious foods from around the world and how to grow them, you need a copy of Global Gardening. It will change the way you think about food– forever.

Send a Cow works with rural community groups in nine countries in Africa, providing small-scale farmers with the skills and means to feed their families and earn an income. I’m grateful for their willingness to share the Hessian bag and keyhole garden information with all of us.

Technology for the Poor‘s mission is to develop, innovate and disseminate sustainable technologies to the poor all over the world. Under the guidance of Dr. Job Ebenzer, bicycles, container gardens and extremely low-cost on-site building materials have paved the way for a better life for the poorest around the world.  Dr. Job has shared all his experience with tires and wading pool gardens with me and I feel very blessed to be able to share it with my readers.

What If? Foundation funds food and education programs for children in Haiti. The success of their program is made possible through the collaborative efforts of members of St. Clare’s in Port-au-Prince, who prepare and serve over five thousand meals every week, enroll students into school, and run an annual summer camp. In 2007, 96% of the donations received went directly to Haiti.

ORDER THE BOOK! Margaret Trost, founder and director of What If? Foundation recently released the amazing story of the project’s history. Please visit the publishers’ website and purchase a copy of On That Day Everybody Ate. The children of Haiti will be forever grateful that you did.
